The Middle School Academics Team is composed of seventh and eighth graders. Every student in seventh and eighth grade is given a screening test. This test is composed of questions from each of the various academic areas. After they take this preliminary test those who qualify are invited to try out.
Try-outs consist of three days of question and answer sessions using buzzers. Students are judged, not only on the number of questions answered correctly, but also on the number of attempts, and their aggressiveness on the buzzers. After try-outs 12 to 15 students are selected to participate as team members.
These team members compete in three to four competitions throughout the year. The first is a national competition on the computer in the fall (The Fall Knowledge Master Open).
This competition will occur during the afternoon usually during the first week of December.
In February each member completes an individual test that is scored against schools across the nation. This is the Scholastic Challenge. The student who scores the highest will receive a medal. We also compete on a Saturday at SBA against the other Catholic schools in the diocese. Our final competition will be sometime in the spring, usually in mid-April.
Again this will be a national competition on the computer (The Spring Knowledge Master Open). We may also have two to four mini competitions against some of the other Catholic middle schools. We usually practice two days a week after school.
We will begin the testing process by the middle of September, and begin practicing as early as the first week of October. We are looking forward to another great year.
Thank You,
Mrs. Dickens
